The importance of personality development is limitless. If we want to see any development in this world around us then we must need personality or personalities which are developed. Without a developed personality, no good is possible in a society. Personality or character of a person is only the deciding factor whether the society he belongs will be benefitted by him or not.

What is Personality or Character?
Commonly, we mean human code of conduct & restraint over it as the definition of personality or character.
Obviously, every individual must possess that fair character. But there is another pervasive definition of the term ‘character’, that definition is not only confined to an individual but to a whole nation. The character of a race or a state is defined by the character of its individuals.
A person's personality is denoted by the tendency he/she possesses. It is none but the tendency which leads three different persons to think & act in three different ways in the same situation. In a human being, there are different tendencies as per various situations. The collection of all these tendencies is called the character of that person. And collectively the combination of characters of a mass represents a character of a race or a country.
Now a question may arise why are we so concerned with personality? Because the community of a society works as per its own tendency & decides the future of a state. So, the history of a nation is the history of advancement or declination of the character of that nation. Therefore we must pay attention to our character if we want to create a fine history.
If we have control over our tendencies, then easily we can build our character. Repeated action develops a habit, and habit develops tendency which is the main key of the character. Each work made by us should be treated with our intelligence & judgment power first in such a way so that it helps us to build our character. We must always follow this rule & avoid doing anything without proper judgment. This practice is known as Restraint. To practice restraint, we need the power of the mind. Good companionship, reading good books, and good thinking is helpful to increase the power of the mind.
Practicing selflessness is a good way to build up a healthy character. If your every action is dedicated to the well-being of many, then it may say that you are on the right track. If every person irrespective of his social position works selflessly, then the whole nation will be benefited & a beautiful society we will have as a gift. But it is painful to admit that we had not had the gift. So, to have a wave of goodness in this present world, the youth must take responsibility. The only path to establishing a farewell world is character-building & here lies the importance of personality development.
The excellence of character:
Every thoughtful personality has expressed his concern about the character crisis at the present time. Injustice & corruption have settled them in present society. All of us are worried & use to blaming the corrupted class or the antisocial. But none is showing the way out of this deadlock. One class of intellectuals has lost hope for any revival of this condition.
Who are antisocial?
We have a vague idea that those who commit bank robbery or murder are antisocial. Is it all true?
Is not a dishonest businessman who practice adultery of food, an antisocial?
Is not a doctor who focuses more on his earnings than healing the sick, an antisocial?
Is not an advocate who charges lump sum money to prove a guilty a fair one, an antisocial?
Is not a popular politician who promises a lot to the public & does nothing after winning the election, antisocial?
The list is not short.
The time has come to think about where we will stop & what will be the standard for our future generation. At this critical juncture, the last hope is pure character. Only a pure character can come forward & work with a totally selfless attitude to welcome humanity. Simple lifestyle, generosity & loving attitude to others make a person pure who makes a healthy society & defends a nation. Without paying due attention to character-building, only making strict laws for a state will go in vain. These laws will no longer be able to stop corruption, deal with poverty, control food crises & make a happy society.
Character building & learning:
This whole world is a school of learning. Wherever we look as we get knowledge, even the meanest animal can teach us a lesson. An inquisitive mind is required to get knowledge from outside, & must we all remember that the aim of all our leanings is for attaining a fair character. The present school education system has failed to give life lessons to the students, leaving society full of characterless people. This system has failed to set up self-respect among the children which are why their minds cease to expand themselves. The ideal education system is here required to construct character & uphold humanity.
How to build a healthy character or personality:
Society is the collection of people. To establish a beautiful society we must make the people beautiful first. People are the foundation of a solid society, if the foundation is weak, then the future of that society is uncertain. A society is a big tree & the people living there are the roots; if the roots stop working then how will the tree grow fruits? So a good character working youth is the need of the hour.
First comes Thought & then Action. We need to think clearly before our actions. A clear thought makes an action fruitful. Who is a beautiful person? The person whose character is beautiful is called beautiful. All of our doings must be character-oriented. If we practice unselfishness, follow truthfulness & give up laziness then our character will be as strong as steel. We may have committed so many wrongdoings earlier because of our ill character, but we can wash out all the stigmas of our character by practicing human ethics; the task is tough but not impossible. So before our character is badly stigmatized, we should start inculcating those ethics early in our childhood.
What is a tendency?
We have known earlier that all our actions are motivated by our tendencies. Now let us discuss tendency. Our habit grows our tendency. An action that is done repeatedly becomes our tendency. We work selectively with a thoughtful mind. Thus, a habit is formed for that particular work. And when our habit becomes stronger, it converts to our tendency. When the tendency is developed then we needn’t follow any criteria to start that particular work. In this way, multiple types of tendencies form our strong character, and when we shall own such a strong character we shall be always obedient to it while making actions. It is needless to say that the right character never prompts us for wrongdoings. So always be alert & let your conscience wakeful before doing anything.
Tools for an ideal character or personality:
You may have some bad habits in you, which you try to cover up permanently with good habits. These are some tools that will be helpful to exercise good habits.
Honesty, Self-respect, Self-confidence, Courage, Clear thinking, Enthusiasm, Civility, Dedication, Presence of mind, Truthfulness, Strong determination, Hard work, Tolerant, Self-restraint, Service, Discipline, Sympathy, Self-reliance, Tenacity, Cleanliness, Trustworthy, Patience & Unselfishness.
One who will follow these virtues with dedication will surely gain a fine character soon & will elevate us from a two-legged animal to a two-legged human being.
History is only for the right character or developed personalities:
If we culture the history of several civilizations we can meet the personalities of strong characters. They raised their voice against the then authorities of those societies where common people were treated like animals. The sorrows, and deprivation of the people were addressed by those few persons. Those few characters didn’t hesitate to start a revolt against rotten social systems. They were dedicated to establishing a fair-well state where everybody will enjoy the same rights. Their lives were meaningful because their deeds were unselfish & humane.
What was their asset? It was nothing but the power of their character. The ideal character which they possessed inspired them to act for the common helpless people. Those historical individuals stake their whole life for the sake of humanity, so their work is remembered with great respect. Today’s society is the gift of their struggle & the society of the future will not remember us if we behave like an animal.
